Yggdrasil, the World Tree of Norse cosmology. Tattoo designed and drawn by me, tattooed by Jared at Standard Electric Tattoo in Lawrence, KS Muspelsheim and Nifleheim are depicted as the Sun and Moon, respectively. The rays of the sun are represented by Maðr (ᛘ) for Muspelsheim, and the rays of the moon are Nauðr (ᚾ) for Nifleheim. The names of each of the remaining seven worlds follow suit. Six are represented by boughs of the tree; Óss (ᛅ) for Ásgarðr, Úr (ᚢ) for Vanaheimr, Sól (ᛋ) for Svartálfaheimr, Lögr (ᛚ) for Ljósálfaheimr, Hagal (ᚼ) for Helheimr, and Is (ᛁ) for Jötunheimr. The trunk of Yggdrasil is marked with another Maðr rune, though this time for Miðgarðr: our home. In the Crown of Yggdrasil rests the Great Eagle, nameless to all. Beneath the Tree, and between its roots, coils the Great Serpent Niðhöggr. The roots of the Tree extend down, to connect to the branches of a bindrune; primarily it is the bindrune for the Skaldic band Wardruna, a symbol that stands for the name itself, which means "Warden of the Runes." This symbol is viewed right-side-up when Yggdrasil is viewed upside-down, as Óðinn would have seen when he hung from the Tree to gain his runes. Beneath the Wardruna bindrune, and attached to it's stem, is a smaller bindrune of my initials, done in Elder Futhark to match the runes of the Wardruna. #norsemythology #NorseTattoos #yggdrasil #nineworlds #vikingtattoo #viking #heathen #nidhoggr
